Artist Notes
Lucian Freud is one of my favourite figurative painters. I don’t think I intended to paint him when I started. What happened was a face emerged from my random messing around and then a specific self portrait of Freud popped in my mind. It was the Freud self portrait I used in “Pareidolia #2” which you can see here. Once that image of Freud was in my mind, I just went with it. My subconscious guided me. I believe at that point I looked at several of his self portraits (and a few of his portraits of other people) and came up with some kind of amalgamation. I didn’t want to just copy his painting so I made it my own, in my own style. These are the reference photos I used.
